Saturday.

I love these two to pieces.
How lucky am I to get love notes all the time!
 Mama has a new bike!
Yep.  Seriously have not rode a bike since...hmmm.....junior high maybe.
The kids thought it was pretty cool that I knew how to ride, although to tell you the truth.  I was scared.
It's like I forgot how to stop!
Probably shouldn't wear flip flops, right?
Needless to say we are practicing tomorrow.
I will let you know how it goes.
Isn't she pretty though?

Beautiful Day.

It was beautiful today.
We were out and enjoying the weather
early this morning.

There was bike riding,

Lawn mowing
Sprinklers
Popsicles
  and Yard Work
Seri gets excited to help pull grass
from the front walkway.
She loves it and so do I.
Another wonderful summer day.
What day is it?
I am starting to forget.
A true sign it's summer.

Stop and be Present

They may forget what you said,
but they never forget how you made them feel.
Carl Buechner

I came across this on one of my favorite blogs Clover Lane and she couldn't have said it better.

I love this quote.  More today than ever, I think all of us mothers need to hear it.

I sometimes feel sorry for our children.  I am sure our mothers had their own distractions, but it can't be anything compared to what we have today.  Not only are we expected to do so much more in addition to raising our children and keeping our house, we also have so many more opportunities to be distracted by technology: phones, email, the internet.

And no matter how convenient all this technology makes our lives, it also pulls us away from the stuff that really matters.  We all know it is no fun to talk to someone who is constantly being disrupted by a cell phone, or to carry on a conversation with someone whose mind is elsewhere.  How can children feel differently?  They know when we are really listening, and we know that children thrive with real attention...the kind where we are not just present physically but mentally as well.  Do we make them feel important when we are multi-tasking them into our lives? How many moments are we missing with so many distractions?   Do they feel like a priority when they see us unavailable to them because we are on the phone, or on the computer?  Are we constantly rushing them because we have a million places to go or a long list of to-do's?

This little quotation is a reminder to us all I think.  It is a call to slow down, it is a call to log off, it is a call to leave that cell phone unanswered, to STOP and listen to our children, to be PRESENT.  When we are not distracted all day long, we have the ability to be engaged with our families.  When we are engaged with our families, we are more calm and centered and tuned in to our children.  Our children feel worthy of our attention and love.  And that's the feeling they will carry with them into adulthood, and never forget.

One of my goals this summer is to be "unplugged" which means no TV or computer during the day.  It has worked pretty well.  We do still do night movies, but we have yet to bum around and watch tv during these beautiful summer days.  I still mess around on my phone but I try to do it only when the kids are busy doing something else out of the room.
I have been trying to be more "present".  Forget about the dirty dishes, laundry piling up, sprinklers, weeds, etc.  These can wait and will always be there.  My little ones are only little once.  I don't want to miss it.

Summer Checklist

We have made our list of things we want to
do this summer.

Week 1 and we have already checked some off.
Check.
********************************
So...just because it's summer, there is NO sleeping in going on around here.  Seriously.  We are waking up earlier than we did for school.  At 6:10 this morning we were up and starting the day.
By 10:00 I had already...

1.  Made and hung up Seri's new bulletin board for the inside of her closet door.

2.  Arranged some of Seri and Jett's books in Rainbow order.  So cute, huh?

3.  Made and hung a new curtain in the kid's room (out of a vintage tablecloth). I had it up before we got the blackout blinds, but decided to make it more permanent.  I love the pom poms.
4.  Pancakes for this little man.
 5.  Fingers and toes painted for this little lady.

Love, love, love summer.
Even if I have to get up so early.

She did it!

Seri learned how to ride a bike...in literally less than 5 minutes.  She hopped on and off she went.  Marli learned how to ride her bike yesterday so there was a little motivation/competition.  She spent the whole afternoon riding around and around the cul-da-sac at Auntie and Uncles...in her swimsuit of course.
We were all so proud of her.
She was beaming ear to ear the whole time yelling, "Look!  I can do it!"
There was slip-n-slides and snow cones
between riding.

We signed up for the library summer reading program this morning.
We have our routine of 30 minutes of writing and 30 minutes of reading times in place and
they started today with all smiles from Seri.
Jett is practicing quiet time on his bed with books for 15 minutes.
We'll see if we can stick to it.

All in all...it was a wonderful start to our first week of summer.

Last day of Kindergarten

I loved, loved, loved being Seri's teacher this year.  She is now a first grader...yikes!  I am so proud of how well she did this year and so fortunate to gotten to spend everyday with her.

Here she is on her last day of school this morning.  Cutie.

Off to the First Grade!  Wow!
